This is a 3D landscape image rendered in Carrara 7 Pro, for a review article in ImagineFX magazine. The foreground terrain elements and the tree trunks were modeled in Hexagon 2.5. The plants were created in Carrara, and the distant terrains were generated using GeoControl 2. I created the tree trunk textures using a procedural shader with procedural displacement. I used the Terrain Tools & Shader Ops plugins from Digital Carvers Guild to help create the water material. Terrain Tools detects the intersect of the terrain with the water plane help create the surface scum which follows the water's edge. I also used the Fake Fresnel in Shader Ops for the reflection falloff, absorption for depth control, and Carrara Fresnel for the transparency falloff of the water. Lighting was very simple with 1 sunlight and 2 helper backfill bulbs, no GI, so very fast render time.
